When airsoft first arrived on the scene in the late ’90s it was hailed as a greener alternative to paintball. It seemed to make sense that because airsoft pellets fired from an airsoft gun are made of plastic, they would be biodegradable. However, this is not the case. Airsoft pellets are made of hard plastic and are not biodegradable.

However, it is important to note that this does not mean that airsoft bb’s are plant-based. Biodegradable products are ones that are able to decompose naturally into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass through microbial or enzymatic action.

Most airsoft bb’s are converted into plant material in an incinerator. Some are incinerated for less than 100 years, so even though they won’t be biodegradable, it is still better for the environment.

The first reason is that airsoft pellets are made from plastic. While airsoft pellets aren’t biodegradable, plastics are biodegradable if they’re broken down into smaller pieces. However, due to the size of airsoft pellets, they can’t be broken down any further.

This means that they can’t be converted into waste. The second reason is that those pieces of plastic that do break down come in the form of smaller pieces, which can sometimes contain fibers that are harmful to the land and/or people. Obviously, you wouldn’t want to be inhaling harmful fibers, but if you are, you are highly at risk.

The answer is yes and no. The material that Airsoft pellets are made of is ABS plastic. It is a type of plastic that is used to make Lego blocks, among other things. The material is fairly difficult to recycle or compost.

More than likely, recycling centers receive so much Airsoft trash that they can’t handle it, and the materials are incinerated. Airsoft pellet guns are also very environmentally friendly. If not built to be biodegradable, then home-radar conversion kits would be the best option for recycling.

This is because they are made out of a hard plastic that is pressure treated (again, like Lego). When treated this way, air softener technology will break down over time in the soil. That means you next time you are composting, you will have a good heck of a lot more debris than the one pile you had yesterday.
